I was just reading an article on Yahoo!News (sadly my primary news source) declaring the thrill of finding a good deal on fashion as the new fashion trend. There's even a name for people like us- recessionistas. Out are the fashionistas spending thousands of dollars on handbags, designer jeans and dog collars and in are the bargain hunters and consignment shoppers.
I've found that most women are born with the gift to bargain shop (unless they were born into gobs of money). Have you ever heard two woman talk:
"I love your sweater."
"Oh, I got it on sale at Banana for like $20."
"Really? Do you think they still have it my size?"
This kind of banter drives my husband crazy. But it's just because he doesn't understand the joy behind finding a good deal. People actually pay attention to what woman wear. So we can't wear the same suit three days a week and just switch out a shirt and tie. We actually have to wear five different suits. And if you repeat any of those the following week you will probably get a sideways glance or two. And let's not forget that women's fashions change weekly (remember satin cargo pants?) but your husband's khaki pants and blue blazer will still be acceptable in fifty years just like they were in style fifty years ago. And don't even get me started on the quality of women's clothes compared to men's.
So the result is we have to shop, but we aren't cagillionaires, so we must shop wisely. And it's okay to be excited about your bargain shopping prowess, heck it's in fashion.
